Phil has decided to keep the identities of his parents and siblings hidden from the media. Having developed an interest in art and gaming from an early age, Phil Fish studied game design at the Montreal National Animation and Design Center.

Phil Fish began his career in the video game industry by joining Ubisoft. At the company, he worked as a level designer for the game, Open Season. He later quit his job at Ubisoft and joined Artificial Mind and Movement. During his stay at the company, his most known work was in the game, The Golden Compass as a level designer. Phil then decided to quit his job and focus on designing his own game. He announced Fez in and was received with positive reviews in festivals.

This helped him find investment and he launched his own video game designing company, Polytron. Now, not only is Fez 2 cancelled indefinitely, but creator of the game Phil Fish has gone largely silent , though he still pops up occasionally to voice his opinions on video games, even his own. No one expected Fez to be as popular as it is, and Fish suddenly found himself at the center of a larger conversation about the state of indie video games, even appearing in a documentary on the subject.
